We "heart" our patients!

February is American Heart Month

Did you know that one in every three deaths in the United States of America is the result of a heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular disease?

And did you know there is a connection between your dental health and your heart health?

Unfortunately, most of us know someone who has experienced a heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular disease.  In addition to being the leading cause of death in our country (some 2,200 deaths per day!), cardiovascular disease is also one of the leading causes of disability.  It is also very expensive to treat cardiovascular disease, accounting for more than $444 billion a year in health care expenses and lost productivity within the United States of America.

We can each help prevent cardiovascular disease by making heart-healthy choices.  This means exercising 30 minutes a day, not using tobacco products, reducing the amount of sodium and trans fat we eat, and taking care of our teeth and gums.  Yes, there is a relationship between untreated dental infections, including periodontitis (gum disease), and the development of heart disease!  This is one of the reasons why dentists, hygienists and other staff at Gregory J. Gauthier DDS, LLC are concerned when full mouth debridement (“scalings”), prescription mouthwashes and other periodontal treatments are postponed or not pursued.

Heart-healthy choices can also help patients minimize the impact of cardiovascular disease after it has been diagnosed.  The American Heart Association and other health organizations promote the "ABCS" approach to reduce risk factors associated with heart attacks and strokes:

    Aspirin (daily low dose)

    Blood pressure control

    Cholesterol management,

    Smoking cessation

February is also Children’s Dental Health Month.  In the United States of America, dental caries (tooth decay) affects more children than any other chronic infectious disease.  In addition to the heart health risk, untreated tooth decay in children can lead to problems eating, speaking, playing and learning.
